Artist in Residence at Cerámica Suro

Norwegian Crafts offers a two-month artist-in-residence program at Cerámica Suro – a renowned ceramics factory in Guadalajara, Mexico . The residency provides artists with the opportunity to develop projects, explore new techniques, and increase their professional network.

Who can apply

Norwegian and Norway-based craft artists primarily working with clay/ceramics. 

The applicant must not be enrolled in any study programs (including high school, bachelor's, or master's programs) at the time of application or during the residency period.

About the residency

Cerámica Suro was founded in 1951 and is a family-run factory in Guadalajara, Mexico, led by José Noé Suro. It specializes in the production of tiles, tableware, and decorative objects, primarily for the restaurant and hotel industry. Additionally, they offer residency programs for artists interested in large-scale ceramic production, enabling them to expand their artistic practice or gain expertise in production techniques in a professional setting. By 2025, over 500 international artists will have participated in the residency.

Norwegian Crafts offers Norwegian/Norway-based artists a two-month residency as an "Artist in Residence" at Cerámica Suro.

The Residency Includes:

50,000 NOK in financial support for travel and stay, covered by Norwegian Crafts.

A personal workspace in the main workshop.

Access to four kilns by agreement:Muffle (950°C)Low-fire (1060°C)Stoneware (high-fire) (1220°C)Faenza (1140°C)

Access to clay, equipment, and glazes for production by agreement, including: Grog clay, Paper clay white, Red body paper clay, Stoneware and Faenza clay

Networking opportunities with other international and local artists

Terms and conditions

The residency recipient agrees to donate one of the works produced during the stay to Cerámica Suro.

Any additional works created that are not donated remain the artist’s property and responsibility for transport or storage after the residency.

The residency recipient must sign an agreement with Ceramica Suro which includes additional terms.

Selection committee

Norwegian Crafts’ residency advisory committee consists of three members appointed for two years by Norwegian Crafts, along with Norwegian Crafts’ director. Members have expertise in crafts or duodji (Sámi traditional crafts), either through practice, education, curatorial work, or writing.

Norwegian Crafts' residency selection committee 2026 - 2028 currently consists of Damien Ajavon, Malin Bülow, Ida Siebke and Hege Veronica Henriksen (committee leader).

Application assessment

Applications are assessed in two rounds:

1. Norwegian Crafts’ selection committee shortlists five candidates.

2. The shortlist is sent to Cerámica Suro, who makes the final decision on the three selected artists.

Application form – How to apply

The application must be submitted in English so that Ceramica Suro can review and evaluate it.

The application includes:

A brief description of your artistic practice, Your ideal 2 month period for the residency, a project description describing your plan for the residency, any material/ equipment requirements, any previous residency experience, an explanation of how your participation at Ceramica Suro will develop your artistic practice, CV and photo documentation

Notification

After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation to your given email.

You will receive a response no later than six weeks after the application deadline. Notifications will be sent via application portal.

Crediting

Once all applications have been processed, all applicants will receive a response, and the selected recipients will be published on Norwegian Crafts' website.

Residency recipients are encouraged to acknowledge Norwegian Crafts' support in social media and other promotional materials whenever possible.

Reporting

Grant recipients are required to complete a report form 2 months after completion of residency. The information collected may be shared between Norwegian Crafts and Cerámica Suro.
