English
Norwegian Crafts and the Saami Council, in collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy in Mexico, currently welcome applications for the 2025 edition of the textile and fashion event Original México.
Original is a cultural movement produced by Mexico’s Government, dedicated to creating awareness about the value of artisanal work and collective creative rights.
Original is a response to the recurring plagiary from national and international labels to traditional symbols and designs from indigenous and mixed communities from Mexico. Each piece represents the cultural heritage that the communities have preserved for generations. It seeks to promote the development of a new ethic in the relationships between indigenous makers and communities with the national and international design and fashion industry.
The 4-day event brings together indigenous communities and organisations from around the world, highlighting and uplifting the status of indigenous crafts at the global stage. The chosen duojárat will have a stand within the international pavilion alongside other indigenous makers from outside of Mexico and the opportunity to participate in 1 of 7 runway shows.
Alongside this, are there many networking and opportunities for knowledge exchange as part of the side programmes “Actividades del programa formativo”.
Norwegian Crafts have previously supported two duojárat, Ann-Sofie Kallok (2024) and Ramona Salo (2023), for their participation in Original.
Participation includes:
- 35 000 NOK support from Norwegian Crafts to cover travel, shipping and subsistence
- Accommodation covered by the Norwegian Embassy in Mexico
- Dedicated exhibition/ sales space
- Runway participation
- Networking opportunities with other indigenous communities and organisations from around the world
